One of the biggest mistakes a new fly fisherman makes when working on their casts is not extending their back cast completely. The fly must be sent out behind you to the fullest before the front cast is initiated. If this does not happen there is not enough torque to send the fly forward with enough energy. You must work on obtaining as tight of a loop as possible while back casting. Look behind you and aim for a tree in the background. See how close you can get your fly to that target. A full extension will help your distance and accuracy with your front cast.
